Post Flood Emergency Support to Affected People

As a follow-up to emergency support and to help the communities restore their livelihood CSS implemented this project in Naria and Zanjira upazilas of Shariatpur district, two of the worst affected zones. The project covered selected 9 unions of the upazilas.

The project addressed two major post flood problems of target areas. Firstly it contributed to renovate the houses that were severely damaged by flood. Secondly, selected farmers received financial support to resume their food production and normal way of life. After losing the crops, farmers were in a demoralized situation to cultivate their land and sow the seed for next crops. The farmers of this area mainly grow rice, jute, mustard and vegetables. Only a handful number of farmers have their own land, while most are dependent on leased farmland. The flood swept away the seasonal crops including Aman rice that were close to harvesting.

This three month (1 February, 2018 to 30 April, 2018) short-term rebuilding and rehabilitation initiative delivered the following outcomes;

- 300 flood affected families with low socio-economic status received financial assistance to repay the loan/s they took for the purpose of repairing/renovating their houses.
- 840 flood-affected farming families received financial assistance to repay the loan/s they took for the purpose of farming activities.

CSS has also successfully implemented a project titled, “Post Flood Rehabilitation Project of Affected People” in selected 3 worst affected villages of Keshobpur upazila of Jashore district. The inhabitants of Keshabpur upazila has continuously been fighting with flood and waterlogging due to its low-lying geographical location compared to its surrounding areas, and poor drainage system. The depth of flood water was recorded as high as 4 feet of the ground level. This six-month Post Flood Rehab project provided long-term solution for the vulnerable families of target area to better cope with flood and water logging by rebuilding the basic infrastructure and resources at homestead and community level.

The Major outcomes are:
- 71 number of flood damaged houses rebuilt and made flood resistant
- 71 number of flood resilient sanitary latrines built with raised plinth
- 6 number of deep tube wells installed with raised foundation
